Opinion: The dangers of oversimplification on social media

Last Updated on September 14, 2022

In the age of social media, it is easier than ever for complex topics to be oversimplified. This can be a good thing, as it allows more people to understand topics which are outside of their general expertise. However, oversimplification is very dangerous.

Most controversial topics are extremely complex, and whilst often conclusions can be still be drawn, the publishing of these conclusions on social media without the context in which they were made is dangerous. This is because social media allows for the dissemination of information without the nuance and context that is necessary to truly understand complex issues.

Oversimplification can lead to a false understanding of complex issues, and can often be used to further agendas that are not in the public interest. It is therefore important to be critical of the information that is shared on social media, and to always seek out additional context before forming conclusions.
